Virginia Gateway Lions Club
One of the proudest local endeavors is to meet the needs of the Latino Community, especially children, across the Northern Virginia region. Dr. Erika Laos formally established this club in June 2021 and serves as current Club President. The club focused on offering free screenings to prevent avoidable blindness and improve quality of life for people who are blind and visually impaired.
According to the CDC, approximately 6.8% of children younger than 18 years in the United States have a diagnosed eye and vision condition. Nearly 3 percent of children younger than 18 years are blind or visually impaired, defined as having trouble seeing even when wearing glasses or contact lenses.
The National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health asserts vision is a global concern. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported
Young children with early onset severe impairment can experience
delayed motor, language, emotional, social and cognitive development, with lifelong consequences. School-age children with vision impairment can also experience lower levels of educational achievement and self-esteem than their normally-sighted peers.
